Series – The Chronicles of Prydain

I have to remember that my oldest is only five. But there are so many epic books I can’t wait to introduce her to, like the Harry Potter series and The Golden Compass. And of course, this beloved award-winning series by Lloyd Alexander, set in a magical land loosely based on Welsh mythology.

The characters of Taran, Eilonwy, Fflewddur Fflam, Gurgi, and Doli, are all my old friends. These books were my security blanket.

Needless to say, I was excited to find the audio version narrated by James Langton, which doesn’t disappoint. I also finally learned how to say their names correctly!

Series – His Dark Materials

The Golden Compass was hands down one of my favourite books as a kid. And when I got a hold of the audio version, ready by the author Philip Pullman and a full cast, I was just blown away!

My little ones are not ready quite yet, but if you have older kids, this epic fantasy trilogy about one tough girl in a parallel universe full of dæmons and armoured bears is a must listen.

So. Good.

I thought this beloved series by J. K. Rowling was fantastic from the first time I read them. Then I discovered the unabridged audiobook series narrated by Jim Dale when my daughter M was born. Seriously one of the best narrators I’ve listened to. He does every character’s voice just slightly differently. Amazing.

These books have a special place in my heart. During the first three months of M’s life, I somehow finished listening to all seven novels, and I truly feel they kept me sane during that foggy period of late night cluster feeds. Mischief managed.

My kids are too young right now as there are some darker themes. But I cannot wait to listen to this series again when they’re ready. Again, this is a must listen.

Check it out through Audible (well worth getting to listen to over and over), or at your library!
